Max Havelaar

Set in the Dutch East Indies, Max Havelaar follows an idealistic colonial official assigned as Assistant Resident to the impoverished district of Lebak. Arriving in Rankas-Betong with his devoted wife, Tine, and young son, Havelaar is heavily burdened by personal debts accrued not through self-indulgence, but through his own boundless generosity. Despite his financial strain, he remains steadfast in his determination to perform his duty and reform the region. Upon taking his post, Havelaar uncovers a deeply entrenched system of colonial exploitation. Native chiefs, having surrendered their traditional rights to the colonial administration for fixed incomes, routinely abuse their power by forcing hundreds of local families into unpaid labor on coffee and sugar plantations. This unchecked coercion drives the population into extreme poverty and a devastating famine, prompting eventual criticism in the Dutch Parliament. Confronted by local systemic corruption and passive official oversight, Havelaar takes a direct stand by summoning the Chiefs of Lebak, invoking the authority of the King of Holland and the Governor-General to demand an immediate end to the extortion and abuse of their people.
